Owl and Bear’s Comic-Con 2011 Picks
Comic-Con is overwhelming. As the convention slowly creeps out into surrounding hotel ballrooms, parking lots, and taco trucks, finding the right events panels can be like looking for a needle in a haystack (if that haystack was also filled with steampunk goggles, overpriced soft pretzels, and Nathan Fillion). Video & MP3: Mister Heavenly Announce Album Release Date
MP3: Mister Heavenly – “Pineapple Girl”
Mister Heavenly, the indie supergroup comprised of Nick Thorburn (Islands/The Unicorns), Ryan Kattner (Man Man), and Joe Plummer (Modest Mouse), have announced the release date for their full-length debut.
The record, titled Out of Love, will be released on August 16 on Sub Pop. For a taste of what to expect from the album, check out the ominously titled “Mister Heavenly is…coming to get you” video teaser and MP3 for “Pineapple Girl” above.
The group hasn’t announced any live dates in support of Out of Love yet, but we suspect those will be coming soon. Whether sometimes-bassist Michael Cera joins the band on tour is anyone’s guess, provided the soft-spoken actor finishes his Simpsons cameo in time.
Battle of the Animation Bands Comes to LA
Cartoons and indie music? This is one of those times to wish LA was closer. The combination of music and art in the form of animation is nothing new. Actually, the history of cartoon bands (also known as virtual bands) spans over a half a century. From The Simpsons to South Park, animators are able to create the fictional bands seen only in our dreams. Here is a little Cartoon Bands 101 with some of the more well-known animated musicians: Continue reading…
Poetic Memory: Murder By Death (List)
Since Murder By Death took their name from a 1976 spoof that actually guest starred Truman Capote, it wasn’t surprising when their Poetic Memory came back consisting mostly of (goofy) movies. Everything from Big Trouble to Bogus Journey is represented in their list, so the next time you embark on a long trip, you’ll have all the materials you need to effectively plan your van viewing.
The Indiana alt-rockers just released Good Morning, Magpie on April 6, and it’s a gooder. They’ll also be playing the Casbah on April 11. Ha Ha Tonka and Linfinity — two other excellent bands — will open the show. We posted Linfinity’s Poetic Memory yesterday; Murder By Death’s list is below. Continue reading…
