MP3: Rumspringa – “Criminal Love”

L.A.’s Rumspringa just released Sway, their debut full-length. Produced by Mannie Nieto (The Breeders, Los Lobos), the album works well to showcase the band’s brand of psychedelic-surf-garage-punk. And though Sway is reminiscent of David Bowie, T-Rex, and the Stones — with a little bit of The White Stripes thrown in for good measure — Rumspringa’s sound is wholly their own. With an abundance of original melodies, great lyrics, and solid musicianship, they are clearly going places.

MTV News has called Rumspringa “One of the best LA bands […] in a really long time,” and RCRD LBL has commended them for “running feverish, fast-paced rock-n-roll trails in our head.” We saw them at The Rumble back in August and had a hell of a good time.

Rumspringa will play the Soda Bar on 11/15, and Bar Pink on 12/4. In anticipation of the shows, lead singer Joey Stevens sent us a list of influences. Check it out below.

This Saturday at Bar Pink will be the last chance this year for San Diegans to gorge themselves on the Rumble’s smorgasbord of free music.

To mark the occasion, our friends at Future Sounds have cooked up a great lineup for Rumble-goers — including Shapes of Future Frames, Ute, and Raw Moans.

First, San Diego’s own Shapes of Future Frames will tantalize the crowd with their special brand of space rock. Featuring members of Scarlet Symphony and The Old In Out, Shapes of Future Frames fuse elements of prog and glam into something otherworldly and unique. The band released its debut seven-inch last year, and is currently at work on its debut full-length. For more information, check out our February 2010 interview with Shapes of Future Frames.

The Rumble Gets Cinematic

As we mentioned last week, this Saturday’s installment of The Rumble at Bar Pink is Echotone-themed.

Echotone is a documentary about the blossoming Austin, TX music scene, and has been described by the AV Club as “beautifully shot, cleverly edited, and suffused with the dark, tenacious humor of the musicians and artists…a timely valentine with purpose.”

In conjunction with the film, Bar Pink patrons and Rumble regulars will be treated to performances by Sunset and White White Lights — two bands featured in the documentary. There will even be a preview of Echotone itself which, if the (below) trailer is any indication, shall be most excellent.

Saturday will also serve as a nice introduction to local up-and-comers Chairs Missing who just released a new EP and are slated to play Sezio’s epic Four Day Weekend event in November. Chairs Missing are stand up guys.

As always, admission to The Rumble is free and delicious Trumer Pils is a mere $3. DJ Tropical Popsicle will man the turntables between sets; we challenge you to say his name five times fast.

In case you haven’t heard, The Rumble is a monthly showcase of local and international indie talent. This month’s event is sponsored by Future Sounds, Indigenous, San Diego: Dialed In, Bedouin Vintage Collective, BMI, M-Theory Records, Reversal Films, Echotone, Trumer Pils, and your friendly neighborhood Owl and Bear.

“Echotone” is a Documentary About the Austin Music Scene (Video)

In conjunction with October’s Rumble — which will highlight Echotone, a new documentary about the Austin, TX music scene — we are pleased to post the official Echotone trailer. The film follows a range of indie bands and their culture over a two-year period, spotlighting everything from the musicians to the venues, promoters, and city itself. According to the filmmakers, Echotone is best described as “a cultural portrait of the modern American city examined through the lyrics and lens of its creative class.”

The October Rumble in San Diego (more on that later) will feature two bands from the film, as well as a sneak preview of the documentary itself. Enjoy!

Jamuel Saxon and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. to Crash September’s Rumble

This month’s Rumble at Bar Pink features indie up-and-comers Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. and local musical hitman Jamuel Saxon, and will be held on Saturday, September 11.

Joshua Epstein and Daniel Zott are the Detroit-based duo behind Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr.. They are known for incorporating many styles and substances into their music — they like samplers and drum machines, but they’re also not above playing to the indie-folk crowd.

Epstein and Zott describe their debut EP, Horse Power, as a “quasi-psych mix of folk, hip-hop inspired drum programming, and effervescent pop within which Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. machines a series of chicanes, straightaways, washboards, and u-turns that when assembled make for quite the interesting ride.” Additionally, Epstein and Zott like to wear Nascar outfits onstage. For a sample of their sound, we’ve got the video for “Nothing But Our Love,” and two MP3s — one of which was remixed by Jamuel Saxon — below.
