The Dodos Go Monochrome

MP3: The Dodos – “Don’t Stop”

San Francisco indie darlings The Dodos just released their fourth album, No Color, and they’ll make their way southward to the Casbah on April 9.

The San Diego stop is part of a whirlwind tour that will send them throughout the United States and Europe. Philadelphia’s Reading Rainbow will support the band’s appearance on the Casbah stage.

With the release of No Color, The Dodos seem to have hit their musical stride. The band’s return to their classic duo formula has produced their most melodic, cohesive effort yet, with a dreamy blend of noisy and energetic tracks. The Dodos are also hoping to hook up some lucky fans with a pair of free tickets by running ticket giveaways in each city via Facebook. All fans need to do is comment on the date of the show they would like to attend (excluding festival dates), and a winner will be selected at random — an easy way to win some tickets, especially for Facebook commenters of the world.

The band also released a new video for their No Colors song “Black Night.” Check it out above. Full list of Dodos tour dates is below.

Sezio Presents Four Day Weekend

Are you sick of eagerly waiting for the weekend to arrive, only to have it fly by before you know it? Do you find yourself sitting at your desk Monday morning, wondering where the heck the last two days have gone?

Thankfully, local music supporters Sezio have devised a great way to help you savor the weekend — they’ve made it twice as long. Beginning Thursday, November 4th, Sezio will host Four Day Weekend, an “anti-festival” comprised of four performances by eight West Coast bands.

The festival gets off to a fine start on Thursday with the Joel P. West-fronted The Tree Ring and local favorites The Vision of a Dying World, who are reassembling their classic, four-piece lineup just for the night. Friday will pair San Francisco’s Dominant Legs with hometown heroes Writer.

Saturday’s show features the most exciting lineup yet, with local buzz-band Cuckoo Chaos — who recently signed to Lefse Records — opening for none other than San Francisco psych-folk act The Dodos. Anybody who has heard The Dodos’ fantastic 2008 album Visiter knows that their presence is a very big reason to be excited. The festival will meet a classy end on Sunday with performances by San Diego’s reverb-happy Chairs Missing and Long Beach chill-pop band Avi Buffalo. Continue reading…

Interview: Shout Out Louds

Shout Out Louds could have been just another casualty of the sophomore slump. Their second album, 2007’s Our Ill Wills, was met with a tepid reception by fans and critics, who criticized it for being over-produced and lifting too heavily from bands like The Cure.

Those complaints have been silenced with Work, the Swedish band’s triumphant return to form. Shout Out Louds have never sounded this driven or vital, thanks to some captivating, no-nonsense arrangements, adhesive melodies, and Phil Ek’s gleaming production.

San Diegans will get to experience Work standouts “Walls” (MP3), “Fall Hard,” and “Show Me Something New” on May 22nd, when the rejuvenated band joins Freelance Whales and Ok Go for an afternoon show at House of Blues. Tickets for the event can be purchased here.

We sat down with multi-instrumentalist Bebban Stenborg to discuss Shout Out Louds’ revamped approach. Continue reading…
