The Observatory North Park was packed wall to wall on August 4 for Tame Impala.
The band put on an amazing sonic and visual show for the sold out crowd, performing songs from their three LPs, Innerspeak, Lonerism, and the newly released Currents.
When Tame Impala walked onstage, lead singer Kevin Parker had an easy smile on his face; he looked like a very relaxed and seasoned pro. The Australian band has been touring almost non-stop for the last two years, so it’s no wonder that Parker didn’t show any sign of the jitters.
The band kicked off their set with a short instrumental intro and then launched into “Let it Happen†and “Mind Mischief.†On “It Is Not Meant To Be,†Tame Impala did what they do best: extend the song into a long, trippy jam that got everyone dancing along.
One of the evening’s highlights was the audience dancing and singing to “Why Won’t They Talk to Me?†a bright and upbeat song off of Lonerism. After that, Parker introduced “It is Not Meant to Be†by saying “Alright guys, here’s an old song.”
Two other crowd favorites were the heavy, guitar-driven “Elephant,†which featured an incredible drum solo and the gorgeous “Be Above It.†The extended instrumentation on this song gave the concert a rave-like feel and the audience was hypnotized.
The band was spot-on musically throughout the night, and the visual effects were almost as entertaining. If you’ve seen Tame Impala’s videos before, you’ll know that the use of bright colors, patterns, and shapes is one approach they employ to draw the listener in. It was the same on Tuesday night: gorgeous music and gorgeous visuals.
