With summer nearing its end and students returning to campus, ’70s rockers Heart rolled a classic rock extravaganza into SDSU’s Open Air Theater. Founding sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson are certified rock gods with a stable of hits and even a recent induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The two talented ladies are still in fine form, rocking a set of classic hits like opener “Barracuda” and favorites “Magic Man” and “Crazy on You.” Everyone from the older attendees to the freshmen wandering by outside knew the songs, with many singing or humming along.

Jason Bonham, son of drumming legend John Bonham, opened the show with a tribute to his father’s musical legacy. The so-called “Led Zeppelin Experience” played a ton of Zep favorites and showed off Jason’s great understanding of his father’s technique and style. His backing band was somewhat flat, but the drummer played with passion and power. One highlight was when Heart joined Bonham on stage during his encore, singing through Zeppelin hits like “Misty Mountain Hop,” “Kashmir,” and of course “Stairway to Heaven.” Ann Wilson was on fire singing those classic songs and her vocals seemed perfectly suited to the Robert Plant range.
