An all-ages crowd gathered at the East Village’s Moniker Warehouse on Saturday night to watch local favorites Cuckoo Chaos play. The show was a benefit organized by the Chisomo Idea music blog to raise funds for the construction of a soccer academy in Chinsapo, Malawi. It’s hard to tell how much actual money the youthful attendees coughed up, but they were at least generous with their attention.
Local trio Lady Day served as openers, impressing the audience with their dark, smokey folk, imbuing songs like “Imaginary Boyfriend” with surprising depths of atmosphere and emotion. Cuckoo Chaos closed out the night with a set comprised entirely of new material. The songs — slated for inclusion on the follow-up to last year’s critically acclaimed Woman — contained the band’s usual sonic playfulness and dance-friendly grooves, but signaled that Cuckoo Chaos are currently headed into some exciting musical territory.
