Who hasn’t been to a concert where people are more interested in their phones than they are in the musicians? That all-too-common occurrence can be annoying for the band and distracting to the people actually trying to watch the show. But it also makes for a fun music video.
That’s the premise for “Digital Girls,” the latest video from local favorites Soft Lions. It finds Soft Lions performing for an indifferent group of people who won’t look up from their screens. In a bid to gain their attention, frontwoman Megan Liscomb uses an increasingly bizarre and desperate series of tactics that includes everything from flirting to bullhorns to LOLcats.
Soft Lions filmed “Digital Girls” at the Music Box in Little Italy. Several San Diego musicians make appearances, including Dustin Lothspeich (Boy King, Diamond Lakes, Chess Wars, Old Tiger), Brian Reilly (The New Kinetics, The Hiroshima Mockingbirds), and Emily Reilly (Birdy Bardot, The New Kinetics).
The video was directed by Owl and Bear’s own Chris Maroulakos, who previously directed Soft Lions’ 2014 “Soft As Lions” video and co-directed their 2015 “Waitress” video.
“Digital Girls” is one of six tracks off the band’s new XOXO EP, available tomorrow, October 28, on Velvet Blue Music. The EP was recorded at San Francisco’s Tiny Telephone and produced by none other than John Vanderslice. You can listen to the first single “Freeway” here and buy XOXO here.
