Thao and the Get Down Stay Down unleashed their singular sound at the Belly Up on Thursday.
Touring in support of their new release, the Merrill Garbus-produced A Man Alive, Thao Nguyen and her faithful backing band displayed a fierce confidence throughout their set. But hey, with material this strong, why shouldn’t they be confident? Touching on songs from all four of their albums, Thao and the Get Down Stay Down dropped profound lyrics, ragged arrangements, and funky grooves on the Solana Beach crowd.
In addition to her customary, distinctive vocals, Nguyen also demonstrated some impressive rapping chops, including a cover of Missy Elliot’s “Get Ur Freak On.” If you weren’t lucky enough to catch it person, you can see the band perform the song for KCRW here.
