San Diego’s Bit Maps have just released their debut album, On-Demand Living. In true DIY fashion, the record was written, engineered, recorded, and produced entirely by Bit Maps in their studio.
The five-piece band is fronted by Drew Andrews of The Album Leaf and Via Satellite fame on vocals, Rhodes piano, and synths. Other members include Erik Norgaard (bass), Josh Carlson (guitar, synths), Matt Bennett (drums), and James Zzyzyx (guitar).
According to Bit Maps’ press release, their electronic, decades-spanning sound draws from “’60s psychedelia, ’70s R&B and prog rock, ’80s yacht styles and New Wave synths, ’90s shoegaze atmospherics, and…the electronic onset of the first block of the 2000s.”
When the always-friendly Andrews isn’t making music or tending bar around town, he also somehow found time to write. He just published his debut novel, The Shepherd’s Journals, earlier this year.
You can purchase On-Demand Living now via the usual digital suspects, or you can grab a vinyl copy in person at any of Bit Maps’ shows. The band opens for Sam Prekop at the Casbah this Sunday, June 9. A formal album-release show is currently in the works as well.
