Adorable retro-poppers She & Him will play SDSU’s Open Air Theatre on June 21.
The duo, comprised of M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel, is touring in support of its third proper album, Volume 3. Math majors will be quick to point out that the record is technically the band’s fourth if you count 2011’s covers album, A Very She & Him Christmas. Maybe calling the new release Volume 3 is meant to be some kind of hint to fans that Christmas isn’t part of the official, canonical She & Him continuity. Fanfic writers should adjust their works accordingly.
Volume 3 is set for release on May 7 in the U.S. and May 13 in Europe. According to the press release, the album finds Deschanel stepping out of her comfort zone, incorporating “tempo shifts, disco grooves, string arrangements…and horn flourishes” into her compositions. The band also enlisted a bevy of guest stars to help out with the album, including Mike Watt, Tilly & the Wall, Rilo Kiley’s Pierre de Reader, and Devotchka’s Tom Hagerman.
Deschanel has been enjoying plenty of success lately, thanks to her day job starring in FOX’s The New Girl. Now in its second season, the show has wasted no time in establishing itself as one of the funniest, wittiest, and most downright enjoyable shows on television. Also, [SPOILER ALERT] Nick and Jess totally kissed this week. OMG.
It’s yet to be determined when tickets for the June 21 show will go on sale, so keep an eye out. In the meantime, you can check out the full list of tour dates and Volume 3 track list below or enter to win a free pair of tickets here.
