O Christmas Tree-O, Much Pleasure Thou Gives Me-O

In a world where retail stores change their shopping soundtracks immediately after Halloween, and this exists at all, you’re crazy if you’re not tired of Christmas music by early December.

Fortunately, there’s a cure for the Christmas music blues: jazz. The La Jolla Athenaeum‘s jazz program will return to the studio of the Athenaeum School of the Arts on December 7 for a performance by acclaimed New York City-based drummer Matt Wilson, joined by multireedist Jeff Lederer and bassist Paul Sikivie.

Called “easily one of the best drummers of his generation” by the New York Times, Wilson is currently on tour to support his 2010 album, Matt Wilson’s Christmas Tree-O. According to the Athenaeum website, the album takes a “mischievous and humorous perspective on the beloved yet sometimes well-worn standards of the holiday season,” from irreverent interpretations of classics to treating “The Chipmunk Song” like an Ornette Coleman standard. It’s the exact opposite of everything that’s foisted upon your ears during the holiday season, and it’ll even add some Christmas cheer for good measure.

Matt Wilson’s Christmas Tree-O will perform at the Athenaeum School of the Arts (4441 Park Boulevard, San Diego) this Friday, December 7 at 8:00pm. Tickets may be reserved by calling (858) 454-5872.
