The Tree Ring unveiled some tracks from their new album Brushbloom on Saturday.
The album was funded by a grant from the San Diego Foundation’s Creative Catalyst fund, and it’s safe to say their money didn’t go to waste. The new songs had all the quiet intensity of The Tree Ring’s Owl and Bear-approved previous album, Generous Shadows.
Birch North Park Theater’s elegant surroundings provided a stately setting for the highbrow arrangements, but frontman Joel P. West’s humble stage banter (and the rowdy gaggle of hipsters in the front row) kept the night from feeling stuffy. Throughout the set, West and his group of talented musicians evoked prestige bands like Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes, and Andrew Bird, and it’s easy to imagine The Tree Ring enjoying similar acclaim someday.
