MP3: Ty Segall – “You Make the Sun Fry”
Looking back at the O&B archives from 2011, it’s easy to see that Ty Segall is a friend of San Diego. The California psych-rocker played here twice last year: he opened for Stephen Malkmus at the Belly Up in October, and headlined the Casbah in July.
It’s clear that Segall can’t get enough of America’s Finest City, and the truth is we can’t get enough of him either. With his T. Rex-meets-Syd Barrett aesthetic and West Coast attitude, Mr. Segall is perfectly suited to our laid-back Pacific burg.
It doesn’t hurt that his fifth and most recent full-length, Goodbye Bread, was one of the best albums of 2011. Songs like “Comfortable Home” and “You Make the Sun Fry” soundtracked many an indie fan’s summer last year (and likely will this year, too). Segall also recently announced a new collaboration with White Fence (not to be confused with the decidedly unrelaxed East L.A. street gang of the same name). Called Hair, the new collab will come out on April 28. According to Segall’s label Drag City, the album “takes many forms, from poppy lunges to acoustic strolls to freak-downs at end of the side.”
Hopefully we’ll get to hear some of this new nonsense when Segall plays the Casbah on March 4.. Mikal Cronin, The Feeling of Love, and San Diego’s The Kabbs will open.
