MP3: TV on the Radio – “Caffeinated Consciousness”
TV on the Radio‘s latest album, Nine Types of Light, will be released next Tuesday, April 12, and it’s full of love songs. The amorous vibe is a change of pace from the band’s usual tales of urban distress, but it doesn’t mean the Brooklyn boys have gone soft.
On the new nature of TVOTR’s new work, singer Kyp Malone says, “I like love songs…I like the forms of love songs, the poetry.” However, listeners who delve more deeply into the songs will still find Malone’s characteristic darkness, or as he puts it, “Beautiful sounding lies… ‘You’re the only one I ever loved?’ It’s a terrible thing to say to someone because it’s most likely not true.”
With that quote, it’s possible that Malone just cock-blocked millions of douchebags everywhere — but that’s not what’s important. What’s important is that TV on the Radio are about to kick off a massive tour, with plans to play San Diego’s 4th and B on May 13. To celebrate their SoCal stop, we’re giving away 5 pairs of tickets to see the show. That’s a lot of chances to win, but if you’re not the gamblin’ type, you can purchase tickets here.
For your chance to win a pair of tickets, follow these two easy steps: 1) Comment below with your favorite TVOTR lyric. 2) Email contest@owlandbear.com with your full name and mailing address. Our five favorite comments will be chosen on May 10. Go!

From "I Was A Lover"
I once joined a priest class, plastic, inert
in a slowdance with commerce
like a lens up a skirt
Gold is another word for culture.
Leads to fattening
Of the vultures
Till this bird can barely fly.
And when the night comes I'm fiending like a pyrale
And I know stables my survival
When there's music all around me and I haven't got a single word to say
wading through the market's waste, we locked eyes felt our loneliness abate, true desire showed its face, but only momentarily…
(i love farmers markets too! hehehe)
Oh I will be your accident
If you will be my ambulance
I will be your screech and crash if you will be my crutch and cast
I will be your one more time if you will be my one last chance
So fall for me
"Turn me up inside you
Up and into the heart of your world"
Dirty Whirl Wind, Return to Cookie Mountain
“We’re just psyched. So psyched. So psyched. So f***ing psyched.”
From Poppy on Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes
Love those guys! RIP Gerard Smith!
"We're just psyched. So psyched. So psyched. So fucking psyched."
From Poppy on Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes
Love those guys! RIP Gerard Smith!
"WASH THE DAY"
Little flightless metal birds
High above in limbless tree
Echoes from their tiny box
Ring out into the atmosphere
Creating beauty inadvertently
"Beneath the cigarettes and sugar shit of alcohol on your breath/I can taste the ocean on your tongue" – "Playhouses"
So Good!
"It's just that all you were was all I could want…"
My favorite lyric- "The music is all around and I haven't a thing to say"
That must be some amazing music.
Maybe I'm the fool but I think we'd find
That we could all be so so kind
If you'd just leave your tread mill power trip behind
Oh leave your treadmill power trip behind
And maybe it's best that you're so so blind
It's best that your so so blind
Because your heart can't grieve
I will be your accident if you will be my ambulance
And I will be your screech and crash if you will be my crutch and cast
Ball so hard we'll smash the walls
Break the bed
And Crash the floors
Don't Stop
Laugh and Scream
And have the neighbors call the cops
Till all the eyes that've seen our fire play
from Lover's Day <3
"Let's pursue this argument in darkness / Curtains drawn, limbs entwined."
–from Wear You Out
…hot hot hot!
And we liked to party
and we kept it live
and we had a three volume tome of contemporary slang
to keep a handle on all this jive
From I was a Lover
Heart beat sounding
Ricocheting in their cage
Thought I'd lose my balance
With the grounds bounce and sway
And all this violence
And all this goes away
And the vibes that rise like
Fireflies illuminate our play
Broke trust in two
Now no one's looking out for you
Why keep it cruel
Why waste so much to play the fool
"It's a storm faced cloud, hanging in dystrophy
It's a cold, base clown laughing at enemies
It's a rough wild world could you please chaperone
It's a mind field trip, oh leave it the fuck alone"
I'm going outside the box.
"With all due respect sir, the mantle has passed."
Got a curse I cannot lift
Shines when the sunset shifts
When the moon is round and full
Gotta bust that box gotta gut that fish
~Wolf Like Me
"Suddenly, all your history's ablaze
Try to breath, as the world desintegrates
Just like autumn leaves, we're in for change
Holding tenderly to what remains"
Should you grow an orchard?
Covered in dusty portraits
Blossoms that bloom so fine, just to drop from the vine
I'll listen up tonight
"you listened for the truth
just too bad they lied" from the song "Hours"
Slip slow from night’s deep wells and watch our gardens swell
Once the seeds are sown, wild and overgrown
You’ll see heart’s colors changed like leaves
