When The New Pornographers put out an album, it’s always an event.
There are eight people in the band, most of whom have their own successful projects. For example, lovely vocalist Neko Case enjoyed unprecedented success last year, with her Middle Cyclone album debuting at #3 on the Billboard charts. Carl Newman, Dan Bejar, and Kathryn Calder may not enjoy as much mainstream adoration, but their excellent “side” gigs — AC Newman, Destroyer, and Immaculate Machine, respectively — are always met with critical praise.
What with everybody being so busy, the stars really have to align for all of The New Pornographers to get into the recording studio. But align they did, and on May 4th the band will release their fifth album, Together.
As if coordinating eight people’s schedules isn’t enough of a logistical kerfuffle, this time around the supergroup even enlisted some outside help. The album boasts an impressive list of guest stars that includes Annie Clark (aka St. Vincent), Zach Condon of Beirut, and The Dap-Kings.
Produced by The New Pornographers and Phil Palazzolo (who also recorded and mixed), Together features twelve new songs from the power pop band. For a taste of the anthemic goodness, check out the first single, “Your Hands (Together)” (MP3).
The band’s talent for putting out great albums is matched only by their ever-present wit. So, to help them promote the new record, they brought in deadpan actor Adam Goldberg, star of the hilarious Saving Private Ryan Higher Learning 2 Days In Paris. Watch him interview the band, Chat Roulette-style — except with pants — in the video below.
Finally, be sure to catch them on their upcoming tour, the dates for which are also listed below. Sure, it’s lame that L.A. gets two shows while San Diego gets none, but as long as The New Pornographers keep putting out terrific records, they can ignore America’s Finest Cityâ„¢ all they want.
