2008, Mungler Winslowe
The prolific Casey Brant takes a big step forward with Jumping Ship & Other Stores.
The album, including its sparse but appealing packaging, is designed to convey a sense of narrative, and it’s a relief to see Mr. Brandt frequently succeed in this sense. After all, the narrative/CD idea is not new and many—including major label stars—have made failed attempts.
As in the past, sometimes Brandt’s songs have seemed a little fatty, but this is his most lean record yet (despite being 17 tracks). It’s clear that he has focused on song structure (banjo interludes and everything!), but he may still be too attached to his lyrics to create a truly polished piece of work.
Jumping Ship was written while Brandt lost interest with Brooklyn, and his emotional attachment to the city is reflected in his songs. There is plenty here to maintain the listener’s interest, however; we’ll follow him to his new home in Maryland.
