Almost haunted. Sorry for hyperbole but I get knocked out each time I watch this. The Bubblegum lp that the tracks come from is also very atmospheric. I think it being captured live on TV is downright wonderful. Without going into a pseudo philosophical diatribe about the differentiation between live in concert sans tv cameras or given tv scheduling timing and being filmed for specific time (& the fact that they appear to be going into another number that wasn't televised possibly making this irrelevant) this does seem very natural. I've not made it down to one of these recordings (it's an ongoing programme, with a just finishing current series, with shows I possibly should be recording but haven't been) so I don't know exactly what the circumstances are. If people do full shows of which only part are televised or if they play only a few tracks I don't know. The setting, in a disused Church in Dingle, which I assume from its west coast setting must be beautiful, would tend to lend to a certain atmosphere. Mark seems to be emulating Tom Waits to a degree(while looking like Ron Perlman) both of which I think he pulls off commendably while remaining original. I'm not 100% au fait with all of Mark Lanegan's work. What I have heard has been very rewarding. from the Chocolate Watchband etc alike early work of Screaming Trees through their early 70s hardrock phase and into his more rootsy solo work I think he remains very valid. I'd like to hear more about his collaboration with Jeffrey Lee Pierce whose songs he has been known to cover. Especially since JLP's band the Gun Club are one of my favourites Would also like to know if Mark ever played double bass. Still sticks in my mind as to how he seemed to be playing air double bass when I saw the Screaming Trees at the LSE in the late 80s. Could've been a one-off, I think he's doing it on here too though. I had to remove the Wedding Dress track because it appears on the Other Voices cd. This time I have successfuly removed it, last time it wound up getting restored. Which is why I had to have it pulled from Dime But I've checked it, so it should be good now.
